The Zepler Institute Cleanroom Complex offers a uniquely wide range of expertise in established and cutting-edge process technologies, combined with state-of-the-art equipment for photonics and electronics fabrication and characterisation. Southampton's capabilities cover:

  • Nanofabrication - industry-compatible processing and device fabrication for silicon electronics, photonics, MEMs, Lab-on-a-Chip, and spintronics, including a Multi-Project Wafer (MPW) service
  • Silica Optical Fibre - four fibre drawing towers with a range of technologies (OVD, MCVD) and processes for realising a huge range of fibre types
  • Novel and Compound Glass – a suite of specialist glass making and fibre-drawing equipment for manufacturing some of the world's highest quality chalcogenide glasses.
  • Focused Ion Beam (FIB) - rapid nano-structuring of metallic, semiconducting and dielectric materials and devices
  • Flame Hydrolysis Deposition (FHD) - a state-of-the-art system for the growth of silica to form waveguide structures for integrated photonic circuits
  • Integrated Photonics – planar processing of raw and bespoke materials not typically found in silicon processing facilities, to produce sensing, communications and Lab-on-a-Chip devices.
