Space Park Leicester aims to be a world-leading hub for innovative research, enterprise and education in space and Earth observation, Space Park Leicester will create a collaborative community for academia and industry to develop and grow, forming an East Midlands space cluster complementing Harwell. It is currently being developed by the University of Leicester in collaboration with local, regional and national partners, and will be situated in close proximity to the National Space Centre and City provided business incubation centres in northeast Leicester. Space Park Leicester will provide state-of-the-art facilities for research and development and ultimately manufacturing and provide space for industry to collocate with academia. A programme of new research METEOR is focusing on advanced manufacturing for space, on the next generation of digital intelligent systems and on novel Earth observation technologies. Existing programmes in space science and Earth Observation will continue and expand.
The University facilities are funded and construction has started (October 2019) with the two co-joined buildings opening and being fully occupied in spring and late summer 2021 respectively. In the meanwhile, existing facilities such as the SRC and other facilities on campus are being used to support the aims and goals of Space Park Leicester.
Funding is also being developed for a key feature a commercial Low Cost Access to Space (LoCAS) facility for manufacture of mid-range satellites. This will address the UK’s need for capacity to build satellite constellations, and will provide a pipeline for burgeoning UK launch services, lower the barriers to new entrants in the market and support the development of new business models for downstream services.
