NPL Time & Frequency is also involved in the development of compact infra-red frequency standards as on-board satellite references for atmospheric CO2 monitoring from space for climate change studies. In particular NPL has developed a low-profile continuous wave reference comprising a DFB laser stabilised to a 2051 nm absorption in a low-profile CO2-filled and sealed hollow core fibre, for anchoring a satellite-based pulsed 2051 nm laser probing atmospheric CO2 concentrations by means of differential absorption lidar (DIAL).
