Located at the heart of the Harwell Space Cluster in Oxfordshire, our specialists offer full scale support across several industrial sectors such as nuclear power generation, decommissioning, waste studies, defence, space and robotics. We help our clients get more from their high value assets by improving design, increasing output, extending asset life and demonstrating safe operation. Jacobs operates a specialist Co-60 gamma irradiation facility at Harwell, offering a wide range of test capabilities.

We offer flexibility to irradiate materials and components under conditions representative of typical hostile environments encountered during service.

A non-exhaustive summary of the radiation services facilities and capabilities at our Harwell site:

  • Dry walk-in facility offering versatile experimental configuration where samples can be easily positioned and irradiated under specific environments
  • Wide range of dose rates are available for short or long-term endurance testing
  • Aqueous environments (solutions across the pH scale)
  • Testing under a wide range of temperatures
  • Ageing of instruments under pressure
  • Testing under vacuum or alternative gaseous environments
  • Components under electronic bias or un-bias
  • Experimental environments may be combined as required.
  • Facilities operate 24/7, with potential for uninterrupted irradiation
